Abstract: Virtual reality is based on the ability of a simulation to provide participants with the subjective experience of being located in the virtual place and with the feeling of embodying a virtual body in place of the physical body. Research in cognitive neuroscience of bodily self-consciousness provides the keys for understanding the phenomena of virtual embodiment and virtual presence, and thus to design efficient VR interaction. This includes characterising the limits of agency under full-body motion tracking as well as studying the alterations of embodiment caused by self-contact or perspective change.

Bio: Bruno Herbelin is senior researcher in virtual reality and cognitive neuroscience in the laboratory of Prof. O. Blanke at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He was deputy director of the EPFL Center for Neuroprosthetics from 2012 to 2019, and Assistant Professor at the Medialogy Department of Aalborg University, Denmark from 2005 to 2009. He obtained his PhD from the EPFL School of Computer and Communications in 2005 for his research work on virtual reality exposure therapy under the supervision of Prof. D. Thallmann (Virtual Reality Laboratory).Â
