In late June, the ÁñÁ«¹ÙÍø Engineering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team attended the JobQuest 'Inspire8' careers expo day in Whalan, Western Sydney. This event was a prime opportunity for the EDI team to engage with 1000 Year 8 students from 18 local public schools and introduce them to the exciting field of engineering.

In collaboration with , the EDI team demonstrated the incredible opportunities available at ÁñÁ«¹ÙÍø, highlighting some of the hands-on projects available to students at university, including building a race car with a team of other students.

The year 8 cohort may seem young; however, they are already beginning to decide the paths they will pursue in the future, and it is crucial that we speak with them early in their high school careers.

By engaging with these students now, we can help shape their perceptions, ensuring they consider engineering as a viable and attainable option.

While not all students initially expressed an interest in engineering, or even science and maths, it was rewarding to demonstrate that engineering is a field open to all. By showcasing the diverse and dynamic nature of engineering, we were able to broaden their understanding and spark interest in a wider audience.

Attending outreach events in Western Sydney is a strategic part of EDI’s mission to increase the representation of students from underrepresented backgrounds in ÁñÁ«¹ÙÍø’s Engineering cohort. By connecting with young minds in these communities, EDI aims to inspire and empower a new generation of engineers who will bring diverse perspectives to the field.Â
