Workshops
We organise workshops for female high school students, school career adviser, parents and also the wider community. Through these workshops, the participants will interact with staff and students, and construction practitioners, and be equipped with all the information related to the construction study and roles. 03 May 2023-Workshop
Dr Cynthia Wang attended Multiplex Jump Start Careers Day on 3 May 2023 at the Head Office of Multiplex. She introduced various degrees, including Construction Management and Property, offered by Built Environment to Year 10-12 high school female students and answered their questions.
14 June 2023-Workshop
Watpac organised 30 high-school girls from Oxford Falls Grammar, Marrickville High school and Pymble Ladies College for a site visit at their Barangaroo site on 14 June 2023. Dr Cynthia Wang attended the site visit and gave a presentation on the Women in Construction project.
27 July 2023-Workshop
and Australian Institute of Building (AIB) gave a presentation about Women in Construction to Sydney Girls High School on 27 July 2023. The presentation showed to female high school students that there are different career pathways for them to build a successful career in the Australian construction industry.
6-8 Nov 2023 Cairns Workshops
As part of this project, and in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology, 106 high school girls from 5 high schools participated in 5 half-day career workshops which included VR Construction Site Tour experience, networking with industry representatives and industry panel discussion. Students also had the opportunity for small group or one-on-one conversation with the industry representatives before and after the facilitated panel discussion. The panel discussion covered topics on construction career options, challenges, study options and work opportunities.
21 Nov 2023 Girls in Construction-Queensland
As part of this project, and in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology and Australian Institute of Building, 12 high school girls participated in a 1-day program to build sheds at QUT Garden Point campus.
The program provides girls and teachers information on the built environment and the careers available in construction. The students were given the opportunity to hear from a broad range of professionals during a panel session, experienced a Virtual Construction Site Tour and built 2 sheds.
27 Nov 2023-1 Dec 2023 Girls in Construction-Sydney
As part of this project, and in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Building and TAFE New South Wales, 20 high school girls participated in a 5-day program to build a shed at ’s Kensington Campus. The completed construction was then donated to the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.
The students learnt different processes, including design, procurement, people management, work health and safety, and construction. We hope the participants will feel empowered to take up careers in the traditionally male dominated construction industry. From engineer to project manager to estimator, to roles considering sustainability or work health and safety, there are many ways women can build successful careers in construction.
March-April-May 2024-Workshops
Associate Professor Riza Yosia Sunindijo attended multiple ADCO events with female high school students in March, April and May 2024. He and the female students visited ADCO projects in Narrabeen, Forest High and Castle Hill.
29 April 2024-Workshop
Construction Robotics Coding Challenge where primary and high school students participated in a competition to develop a game which involved building safe constructions to protect people from zombie attacks. We held an award ceremony at . Winners received trophies, medals, and certificates, while participating schools received plaques of appreciation.
8 May 2024-Workshop
Associate Professor Riza Yosia Sunindijo attended Multiplex Jump Start – University and Careers Day at the Head Office of Multiplex. He introduced women in construction project to 120 Year 9-12 female high school students and answered their questions.
Forum
“Women in Construction” forums, seminars and lecturers, are given by female construction practitioners. These events are usually followed by networking events.
02 November 2022-Forum
Ms Alison Mirams, CEO of Roberts Co, was invited by the School of Built Environment to present an UTZON Lecture titled “Shaking up the Construction Industry”. In the lecture, Alison shared the strategies she has been implementing in Roberts Co to fix and advance the industry for the benefit of both men and women.
17 March 2023-Forum
Industry professionals from BESIX Watpac shared their experience to students enrolled in the BLDG1013 Introduction to Construction Management and Property course. Ms Chelsea Warren (People Advisor) and Ms Fay Crawford (Senior Project Engineer) shared their industry experience, career progressions, and Watpac’s culture which celebrates diversity, promotes equality, and empowers women to reach their full potential.
26 October 2023-Forum
We have an event in Oct 2023, the topic is increasing women in leadership role workshop and networking event. The purpose of the event is to discuss specific training or upskilling required by women in the construction industry to progress to leadership level. This event was organised by ACED () and was sponsored by Women in Construction project.
20 March 2024-Forum
We had the ‘Wellbeing Gets Real’ event in Mar 2024. The purpose of the event was to equip women in construction to recognise their stress triggers, reshape their reactions and reclaim control over their wellbeing. This event was organised by ACED () and was sponsored by the Women in Construction project.
21 June 2024-Award
Women in Construction project () received Research, Development and Technology High Commendation award from Australian Institute of Building for their life cycle approach to empower women in construction on 21 June 2024. Here Cynthia Changxin Wang was accepting the award during the event at the Doltone House.
