Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Australian Indigenous Studies

Are you passionate about Indigenous Studies? The Honours program is your opportunity to generate new knowledge and understanding, and to design, develop, and complete a significant research project. It is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in an area of interest and to develop a wide range of skills that can be applied in both academic and professional contexts.

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Indigenous Studies involves intensive study of the discipline. It is a one-year full-time (or part-time equivalent) advanced undergraduate degree for high achieving students. Honours in Indigenous Studies is offered as separate, stand-alone program of 48 units of credit. It's your pathway into a graduate research degree (MA Research or PhD).

Eligibility

Students must have completed their ÁñÁ«¹ÙÍø undergraduate degree program in Indigenous Studies or a relevant major, or equivalent recognised Level 7 qualification at another institution with a major in a stream offered in the program.

Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher (or equivalent) in Indigenous Studies or relevant stream.

Admission to Honours in Indigenous Studies is subject to resources and the approval of the Academic Lead, Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs.

  • Indigenous issues and the law.
  • Theories of decolonisation and settler colonialism.
  • Politics and ideology of race, gender and sexuality.
  • Cultural studies, popular culture, and studies of material culture.
  • Sovereignty, Self-Determination, Nationhood, Self-Government.
  • Aboriginal education, including the history of Aboriginal education.
  • Country-centred/place-based learning.
  • Indigenous research methodologies.
  • Learning and teaching in Indigenous higher education.
  • Indigenous histories, especially contemporary history and history of activism.

  1. Contact the Honours Convenor in Indigenous Studies, Dr Johanna Perheentupa, to discuss your eligibility, research topic and honours program options.
  2. Complete an online application via the (All applicants, current ÁñÁ«¹ÙÍø students and external, are required to submit an online application).
